Everything you apply to your body has a potential impact on your health, including your shampoo. You probably have a favorite shampoo. You have shopped around and found one that smells great and leaves your hair shiny, soft, tamed and full. But, you are probably not familiar with the ingredients found in your shampoo as reading the label is just like reading a foreign language.
Conventional Shampoos Contain Many Toxic Chemicals that May Be Sabotaging Your Health:
In fact, there are more than twelve toxic chemicals to avoid in conditioners and shampoos, since they have been connected to a higher likelihood of cancer, and many other illnesses and diseases.
Believe it or not, even shampoos labelled as possessing “natural ingredients” are not safe. In addition, they still possess harmful ingredients, such as DEA, ammonium laurel sulphate, DMDM hydantoin, and more.
Researchers at the University of North Carolina found that when DEA (diethanolamine) is applied to the skin of pregnant mice, it has a negative effect on their offspring’s normal brain development. It is actually a chemical used as a thickening agent in conventional shampoos, which inhibits the absorption of the nutrient known as choline. This nutrient plays a key role in brain development.
Furthermore, the most commonly used chemical compounds in shampoos include straight-chain alkyl benzene sulfonates. Namely, the frequent exposure to benzene has been associated with MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndromes), leukemia and many other forms of cancer.
Moreover, almost all conventional shampoos possess a highly toxic carcinogen known as 1,4-dioxane. The California Environmental Protection Agency has stated that this chemical could result in neurological, kidney and respiratory toxicity as well as increase the risk of cancer. That’s not all, the Environmental Working Group has noted that 1,4-dioxane acts as a groundwater contaminant.
