Have you been on a plane, with ever-present body odor, poor air circulation, cramped leg room, etc.? So, a warm cup of coffee or tea is an ideal option for most flyers. But, certain reports from many flight attendants might make you change your mind.
Flight Attendants Don’t Consume Airplane Water – Here Is Why:
Many flight attendants don’t consume hot water on an airplane. In short, they do not consume plain tea and plain coffee.
According to a 2013 NBC report, the water flight attendants use to prepare coffee or tea doesn’t come from bottles. It actually comes from a tap. This means that the water they use to prepare coffee or tea doesn’t come from a clean source.
A news release about airplane water was published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2004. Furthermore, out of the samples from 158 airplanes, about 13% possessed coliform. It is a type of bacterium present in the digestive tract of animals (and humans). Although this is a small number, the results showed that 2 of the 158 airplanes possessed dangerous Escherichia coli in the water. That’s not all, 1 out of 8 planes did not meet the water safety standards set by the EPA.
Also, the regulations aren’t strict enough. That’s why cabin crew members don’t want to consume the water that they actually serve.
Airplane Water Should NOT Be Consumed Due to the Transit
As stated previously, the water flyers consume on aircrafts doesn’t come from a clean source. Moreover, the harmful bacteria may contaminate the water when it is in transit.
Additionally, the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health published a study suggesting that more microorganisms actually exist in transport vehicles compared to the inside of the original source of water.
What’s more, an infectious disease specialist at the Baylor University, Dr. Cedric Spak, pointed out that people with a healthy immune system could handle certain bacteria. Dr. Spak also noted that there is not tap water out there that is sterile. Of course, you should prevent dehydration on a flight because it also important for your health in general.
However, Dr. Spak noted that people with a weakened immune system and babies should avoid drinking airplane water.
Safer Alternatives to Consuming Airplane Water
Depending on your flight’s length, it could be almost impossible to avoid drinking water. However, here is what you can do:
- Almost all airports let you buy water near the departure gate; so you can buy a bottle of water prior to boarding your flight;
- You can also pack some sealed water-heavy veggies and fruits into your hand luggage and consume them instead of drinking airplane water;
