Approximately 70% of all brands of olive oil sold in the United States has been found to be fake!
It has been adulterated with cheaper oils. You know that olive oil is a healthy and sustainable food option, but 7 of the greatest US manufacturers of olive oil have been cutting their products with nastier oils, including canola oil or sunflower oil. They simply wanted to reduce the cost of production.
In 2008, about 400 Italian police officers carried out a lengthy investigation known as “Operation Golden Oil”. It actually resulted in the confiscation of 85 farms and the arrest of 23 people. They were arrested for adding chlorophyll to soybean and sunflower oil and selling it as extra-virgin olive oil in Italy and many other countries.
This prompted the Australian government to investigate the quality of their olive oil brands. They examined all brands of extra virgin olive oil in their laboratories. The results showed that none of them were pure olive oils.
As a result of this, the University of California conducted studies on 124 extra-virgin olive oil brands that are imported. The results showed that about 70% of the oils failed the test.

Fortunately, there are also some tests you can do at home to detect if your olive oil is fake or not. All you need to do is keep it in the fridge for about half an hour. Then, check if the oil starts solidifying. In case your olive oil starts solidifying, it possesses a high content of monounsaturated fats. In fact, extra-virgin olive oil is abundant in monounsaturated fats. But, in case the oil does not start solidifying, it indicates that the oil is fake. It is not actually an ideal test yet, but it can reveal the quality of your olive oil.
You should also check if there is official governmental approval seals on the label, like “California Olive Oil Council Certified Extra Virgin” and “Australian Extra Virgin Certified”.
