What Are Real Baby Carrots?
It is important to understand that real baby carrots are grown until the “baby stage.” This means that these carrots are pulled out of the ground before they grow into their full size. They are available in a packaged form in the produce section of most grocery stores. Real baby carrots are often sold with some of the greenery still on them to prove that they are real carrots.
Baby-Cut Carrots Are Soaked in a Chlorine Solution
Baby-cut carrots are soaked in chlorine to preserve that crunch and signature color. Additionally, these carrots are soaked in a solution of water and chlorine prior to being packaged. Moreover, the chlorine is used to minimize the possibility of food-borne illnesses, including E.coli.
According to a manufacturer of baby-cut carrots, Grimmway Farms, baby-cut carrots are soaked in a chlorine solution that is actually within the limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and can be compared to the amount of chlorine present in tap water.
But, the chlorine present in tap water could be detrimental to human health. In addition, the U.S. Council Of Environmental Quality notes that those people consuming chlorinated water are at a 93% higher risk of developing cancer compared to those consuming chlorine-free water.
Avoid Buying Baby-Cut Carrots Because They Are Soaked in a Chlorine Solution
Chlorine is a toxic chemical that belongs to the same chemical group as fluoride known as pathogens. Additionally, chlorine in its natural form is highly toxic.
It is a persistent chemical that doesn’t break down. This means that even if the amount used in the solution to soak baby-cut carrots is in the limit set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it is advisable to avoid it wherever possible.
You may want to buy organic baby-cut carrots rather than buying those soaked in chlorine. In fact, organic baby-cut carrots are soaked in a citrus solution known as Citrox that is free of toxins. You can also buy larger carrots and cut them into smaller pieces.
