Sunscreens Are Loaded with Toxins that Can Increase Your Risk of Skin Cancer! Here Are a Few Natural Sunscreen Options!

A great number of people think about protecting their skin from UV damage and sunburn as the summer sun warms and waxes.

But, getting adequate sunlight exposure can optimize the vitamin D levels in your blood, thus offering various health benefits, including cancer prevention.

Although applying sunscreen to your skin may seem like a good idea, blocking out the sun completely is not perfect.

Sunscreen has become popular in past few decades. However, many sunscreens contain some seriously questionable ingredients, which can cause adverse effects on your skin and body. These adverse side effects include allergic reactions, premature aging, hormone disruption, and even elevate your risk of cancer.

Namely, sunscreens usually include ingredients, which serve as penetration enhancers and help the product enter your skin. Therefore, a number of chemicals found in sunscreens are absorbed into the human body and can be measured in urine, blood and breast milk samples.

Researchers have repeatedly confirmed that what you apply to your skin ends up in your body. Multiple studies from all over the world have tested sunscreen, examining its ingredients and how it enters and absorbs into the skin after application. A team of Canadian researchers at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba wanted to develop a method for quantifying certain sunscreen agents. Researchers concluded that all sunscreen agents penetrated into the skin, which means all of these chemicals enter multiple tissues within the body.

Environmental Health Perspectives published a study suggesting a dramatic reduction in hormone-disrupting chemicals that are found in personal care products after participants started using natural products. These hormone-disrupting chemicals include phthalates, parabens, triclosan, oxybenzone, etc.

All These Chemicals Are Present in Almost All Popular Sunscreens:

– Oxybenzone

It may be the most harmful ingredient present in almost all popular sunscreens. This ingredient is commonly used since it can efficiently absorb ultraviolet light. But, it may lead to hormone disruption and cell damage, thus increasing your risk of cancer.

The Environmental Working Group notes that the chemical oxybenzone is found in most sunscreens.

It penetrates the skin and the bloodstream and serves as estrogen in the body. This ingredient can result in allergic reactions. Researchers have found a correlation between greater concentrations of oxybenzone and various health problems. Oxybenzone has been associated with endometriosis in older women. Moreover, pregnant women with higher levels of oxybenzone had lower birth weight daughters.

That’s not all, a group of German researchers at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Endocrinology at the University of Gottingen examined the regulatory effects on receptor expression for oxybenzonem, which suggest endocrine disruption.

Researchers at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Zurich found that oxybenzone could also simulate the effects of estrogen in the body and induce cancer cell growth.

Australian researchers at the Queensland Cancer Fund Laboratories at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research tested the significance of systemic absorption of sunscreens. They found that oxybenzone stimulated DNA synthesis and cell growth, and retarded the progression of cycle in the first of the four stages of the cell cycle. Furthermore, they also found that sunscreen can contribute to mitochondrial stress as well as drug uptake changes in certain cell lines.

– Vitamin A palmitate or Retinyl Palmitate

The U.S. government scientists carried out a study showing that a type of vitamin A known as retinyl palmitate could accelerate the development of skin lesions and tumors when applied directly to the skin in the presence of sunlight. Another study also confirmed that this ingredient may elevate the risk of cancer.

According to Dr. Joseph Merocla, this means that sunscreen products may accelerate the development of malignant cells and skin cancer, since they possess vitamin A, retinyl palmitate, and retinol.

– Fragrance

This ingredient actually refers to various harmful hormone-disrupting chemicals, such as synthetic musks, parabens, and phthalates.

Getting Appropriate Sun Exposure Can Reduce Your Cancer Risk

In fact, the sun isn’t as harmful as it’s marketed to be. Many studies have proven that getting adequate amount of sun exposure can decrease your risk of skin cancer.

As mentioned previously, your body requires adequate sunlight exposure for optimal vitamin D levels. Although sunburns have been found to be a concern since they are associated with melanoma, human skin has become less resistant to sun exposure. In case you spend a long period of time in the sun, your skin can build a natural immunity. Fortunately, there are many alternative options to reduce your risk of sunburns. There are many natural sunscreens that do not contain any harmful chemicals.

Only about 10% of all cancer cases are associated with all types of radiation, including UV. When you think of skin cancer you usually blame the sun. However, there are many other culprits of skin cancer, such as sunscreen, leather preservatives, pesticides, arsenic, etc.

Keep in mind that the use of sunscreens can lead to toxin accumulation in your body because the harmful chemicals are absorbed within several seconds of application. Moreover, you should not fear the sun because it has created all life on this planet. Also, the sun offers numerous health benefits. Therefore, you should not fear the sun and start using only all-natural sunscreens to get maximum benefits and keep your skin safe and healthy.

Always Choose Healthier Alternatives

When buying sunscreens, read the labels and do not purchase sunscreens that possess toxic chemicals. Avoid purchasing sunscreens that possess the chemicals listed above, and opt for sunscreens that possess titanium and zinc.

It is important to know that the ideal sun protection is clothing and shade. You avoid applying sunscreen on your skin every time you go out in the sun. Sunscreen does not allow your body to absorb vitamin D from sunlight. Therefore, in case you are going to be outside for a short period of time, avoid using the sunscreen and provide your body with the vitamin D it needs for good overall health.

What’s more, coconut oil has been found to offer an SPF of 8, which means it can act as an all-natural sunscreen. Even though it does not have a high SPF, it can be effective at protecting your skin from sunburns. The regular application of the oil will not only provide good sun protection, but it can also hydrate your skin and make it less prone to burning.

Also, you can mix natural sunscreens with coconut oil for more effective sun protection. Before going outside in the sun apply natural sunscreen, and after several hours apply coconut oil in order to supplement the natural sunscreen as well as moisturize and hydrate your skin.
