Researchers at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Zurich found that oxybenzone could also simulate the effects of estrogen in the body and induce cancer cell growth.
Australian researchers at the Queensland Cancer Fund Laboratories at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research tested the significance of systemic absorption of sunscreens. They found that oxybenzone stimulated DNA synthesis and cell growth, and retarded the progression of cycle in the first of the four stages of the cell cycle. Furthermore, they also found that sunscreen can contribute to mitochondrial stress as well as drug uptake changes in certain cell lines.
– Vitamin A palmitate or Retinyl Palmitate
The U.S. government scientists carried out a study showing that a type of vitamin A known as retinyl palmitate could accelerate the development of skin lesions and tumors when applied directly to the skin in the presence of sunlight. Another study also confirmed that this ingredient may elevate the risk of cancer.
According to Dr. Joseph Merocla, this means that sunscreen products may accelerate the development of malignant cells and skin cancer, since they possess vitamin A, retinyl palmitate, and retinol.
This ingredient actually refers to various harmful hormone-disrupting chemicals, such as synthetic musks, parabens, and phthalates.
