Nowadays, migraine attacks affect a large number of people. The migraine attack usually lasts from a few hours to a couple of days.
Each migraine sufferer may experience different symptoms. But, the most common symptoms of this health issue include throbbing and pulsing pain, aura, nausea, vomiting, sweating, chills, and sound, light or smell sensitivity.

The development of this health issue is of complex nature and therefore a great number of studies could not completely explain it. However, most of these studies showed that the root causes of migraine attacks include:
Blood vessel constriction in the brain
Reduced blood flow and blood vessel constriction could be the major culprit of migraines. Specifically, vascular constriction leads to blood vessel dilation and stretching, thus activating pain neurons.
Inflamed and swollen blood vessels in the brain could also contribute to migraines.
A neurological disorder associated with nerve cell activity
Neurological disorders connected to nerve cell activity that moves through the brain and triggers pain are also the main cause of migraine attacks.
Increased blood flow in the brain
There are a few studies suggesting that headaches are not triggered by reduced blood flow, but by an excessive blood flow increase. Moreover, when the migraine attack occurs, the blood flow in the brain is slightly lowered.
The Correlation between Migraines and Vitamin Deficiency
According to a study that has recently been carried out, taking folic acid, vitamin B6, and B12 supplements on a regular basis lowers the migraine attacks within a period of 6 months. What’s more important, previous studies also showed the same results. For example, one of these studies was conducted by the European Journal of Neurology in 2004. Namely, the results showed that the high intake of riboflavin could prevent migraine attacks.
That’s not all, higher levels of homocysteine can result in a specific gene mutation or dysfunction, which increases the risk of migraines. According to studies, the regular intake of vitamins B6 and B12 can decrease the levels of hymocysteine. Keep in mind that the proper dose of these vitamins varies depending on your genotype.
Furthermore, Prof. Lyn Griffiths is a medical researcher that has been examining the genes included in common human disorders for more than 20 years. So, she points out that in case all patients are given the equal vitamin amount for the same period of time, patients with TT genotypes would be expected to metabolize less homocysteine over the treatment period than C allele carriers. In addition, it contributes to slightly decreased homocysteine and consequent symptoms of migraine.
She also says that even though TT genotypes are at a greater risk of developing this health problem, they may need a higher vitamin dosage to show the same effect as C alleles. However, more comprehensive clinical trials should be carried out to confirm the results.
She emphasizes that taking vitamin B supplements is a safe and inexpensive natural treatment to cure migraines.
Also, other kinds of vitamin deficiency can increase the risk of migraine attacks. According to a study at the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Headache Society, about 42% of chronic migraine sufferers also experience deficiency in vitamin D. The results also showed that the longer the period an individual experiences chronic migraine attacks, the higher vitamin D deficiency.
