Post-Surgery Recovery

The first six weeks after surgery determine your long-term outcome more than the surgery itself — here’s the equipment, the timeline, and the warning signs nobody covers.

The Brief
  1. Hospital discharge planners give you a printout. It’s usually incomplete and oversold. We made the real list.
  2. DVT is the post-op risk nobody talks about until it happens. Compression socks, sized correctly, are most of the prevention.
  3. Wound infections move from "monitor" to "ER" in hours. We tell you which signs are which.

What happens in the first six weeks after surgery determines your long-term outcome more than the surgery itself. This hub combines guidance from Johns Hopkins Patient Education, AAOS post-op protocols, and wound-care nursing standards to help you (or the person you’re caring for) navigate recovery from joint replacement, abdominal surgery, mastectomy, and other common procedures.

Do I actually need an ice machine after knee surgery?
Surgeons disagree. RCTs show modest improvement in pain and ROM, but ice packs work too if you’ll actually use them. Renting an ice machine for week 1 is a reasonable middle ground.
Compression socks — what mmHg level?
Knee/hip replacement: 15–20 or 20–30 mmHg per surgeon protocol. Abdominal/C-section: 15–20 mmHg. Mastectomy lymphedema: 20–30 mmHg, professionally fitted. Higher isn’t always better — wrong fit can cut circulation.
When is the surgical site infected vs just healing?
Normal: pink edges, mild warmth, slight serous drainage shrinking by day 5–7. Concerning: spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, foul odor, opening of the incision, fever >101°F. The last four are call-the-surgeon-now territory.
How long until I can shower?
Most modern incisions: 48 hours, no soaking. Submersion (bath, hot tub, pool): typically 2–3 weeks, surgeon-specific. Cover with a waterproof dressing if your surgeon allows brief showering earlier.
When should I be worried about post-op constipation?
No bowel movement by day 4–5 + abdominal distension + nausea = call the surgical team. Opioids cause this routinely; ask for a stool softener prescription at discharge.
